CSIS Lecture Series on Regional Dynamics The Indo-Pacific Idea: Myth and Reality

Mon Oct 22 13:30 - 15:30

CSIS Lecture Series on Regional Dynamics
The Indo-Pacific Idea: Myth and Reality

Speaker
Amitav Acharya
UNESCO Chair in Transnational Challenges and Governance
School of International Service, American University, Washington, DC

While the idea of an Indo-Pacific region has received a great deal of attention, there remains much uncertainty about how it might evolve and affect the existing regional architecture. This seminar will discuss competing conceptions of the Indo-Pacific, as well as issues of regional coherence, capacity, leadership and institutional architecture that will determine its success or failure. Do existing regional institutions such as ASEAN, SAARC and EAS risk being marginalized, or can they adapt to the Indo-Pacific idea? Is the region facing an era of unmitigated great power rivalry or a Great Power management system based on elements of competition and accommodation?

About the Lecture Series

CSIS Lecture Series on Regional Dynamics is one of the latest initiatives by CSIS’ recently reinvigorated Department of International Relations. This is a regular event that aims to broaden interests amongst policy makers, intellectuals and diplomatic community for the rapidly evolving dynamics in East Asia, as well as to generate critical yet constructive policy debates on prominent issues in the region. Our current focus on Regional Dynamics is an expanded version from our earlier China Study Group program.
Previous distinguished speakers include: Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah (Malaysia’s Foreign Minister), Mark Field (United Kingdom’s Minister for Asia & the Pacific), Huang Xilian (Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN), Alexander A. Ivanov (Russian Ambassador to ASEAN), Bill Hayton (Asia Program of Chatham House), Yan Xuetong (Tsinghua University), and David Shambaugh (George Washington University).
