The day has come for the world to deal with a completely different America. There are no more allies, partners or friends, as all countries are proven to be vulnerable to Trump’s economic statecraft. No matter having a free trade agreement (FTA) or a longstanding treaty alliance, tariffs will remain haunt and hit. Gone are the days when the United States provides global public goods through unilateral market liberalization and multilateral institutions. Much worse is that rationality and common sense no longer lead the decision-making process. In responding to the features of Liberation Day on April 2nd, this piece argues that while the tariff will likely reshape its competitiveness and market access, the opportunities lie as far as Indonesia is committed to pursuing a long-term sight on the domestic reform and the region could forge a collective response against the phenomenon.
