About Centre for Strategic and International Studies

The Resident Fellowship (or Visiting Fellowship) program is primarily designed to support students who are in the process of completing their PhD theses, though it is not limited to this group. Opportunities for post-doctoral researchers or non-degree fellows are also available.

The Non-Resident Fellowship is an exclusive program tailored for distinguished individuals seeking to engage with our Centre on a flexible, non-residential basis. Fellows contribute their expertise to ongoing research, offering valuable insights and collaborating remotely with our team. This fellowship is available by invitation only. 

 

CSIS can provide the following for visiting fellows:

  • Office space (subject to availability)
  • Access to library and other physical facilities
  • Access to internet and printing services
  • Letter of reference (upon request)
     

Visiting fellows are required to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  1. Visiting fellows will be subject to administrative fees to cover meals and use of Internet and printers
  2. Visiting fellows are required to give at least one presentation relevant to their research topic during their stay in CSIS. This exercise will further encourage exchanges of views between the respected fellow and researchers or other scholars in CSIS. Detailed arrangement of the seminar can be made with CSIS staff
  3. Visiting fellows are required to be based in CSIS while conducting their fellowship. Should they need to conduct research-related activities outside of CSIS, these have to be consulted with the fellowship coordinator
  4. Visiting fellow is expected to contribute at least one article, either in English or Indonesian, to one of CSIS journals (Indonesian Quarterly and/or Analisis CSIS) during or after their stay. Detailed information on writing guidelines is available at journals.csis.or.id
     

We accept visiting fellowship requests year-round. To apply, send your Curriculum Vitae, a recent photograph, research proposal, and letter expressing interest to: fellow-intern@csis.or.id. The subject of the email must be CSIS Fellowship-Period-Complete Name.

Please submit your application well in advance, as the approval process may take up to one month. Before submitting, ensure that you are familiar with the Indonesian visa requirements by visiting the official eVisa portal and that you have secured the necessary funding for doing fellowship at CSIS. 

 

The fellowship request will be assessed based on the following indicators:

  • Space availability
  • Alignment with the research agenda of relevant departments and CSIS
  • Completeness and relevance of submitted documents
  • Strength of recommendations

 

The internship program at CSIS aims to provide students with an opportunity to work and conduct research on issues pertinent to Indonesia. Internship opportunities are only available for those holding at least an undergraduate degree in majors relevant to CSIS' research topics. Internship positions are available for Fall, Spring, and Summer Terms. Internship duration may vary between 10 to 16 weeks.

  • 3rd year or 4th year undergraduate/master’s student or fresh graduate with economics/politics/international relations background
  • Strong interest in international, regional (East Asia, Asia Pacific or ASEAN) and Indonesia’s domestic issues
  • Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies and research techniques preferred
  • Strong analytical, writing, communication and teamwork skills
  
  • 3rd year or 4th year undergraduate student or fresh graduate
  • Majoring in communications, visual communication design, computer science, library science, economics, international relations, social-political science, or any other relevant fields
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in one, or a few of the following skills:

Job Description 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Executing the design, a spectrum of visual projects, including print/digital publications, graphics, data visualisations, branded templates, brochures, logos, email banners, event materials, newsletters, and other CSIS dissemination materials 

  • Research and compile assets for design, multimedia, and digital projects, including photo research 

  • Managing CSIS social media content and schedule, including engagement with followers and drafting press-releases 

 

Team Functions: 

  • Work closely with the KM team and research departments to develop new contents and dissemination strategies that suit stated goals and needs and align with CSIS’ research outputs; communicating effectively with non-technical stakeholders is critical 

  • Assist the Outreach Manager as content-proofread to keep policy messaging sophisticated and intact while making contents within scope and digest-able for diverse audiences 

  • Other duties and projects as needed 

 

 

Qualifications 

Core Competencies: 

  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite and specifically solid experience with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop 

  • Familiarity with collaborative social media management and analytics tools 

  • Experience in managing social media platforms 

  • Strong English and Indonesian proficiencies 

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and other web tools/languages is a plus 

  • Familiarity with DSLRs, ENG Cameras & Basic 3-point lighting is a plus 

  • Background in social and political sciences 

 

Specific Preferences: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with minimum one year of relevant experience (university experiences count) 

  • Strong creative thinking and sense of art 

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; including effectively presenting information to non-technical partners, operating in a fast-paced environment and managing competing priorities 

  • Strong attention to detail, initiative, and follow through skills 

  • Strong interest in global affairs and public policy 

  • Sound judgement, maturity, and discretion
